Azuma Kofuji

Famous mountain also called “Snow Rabbit”

An active volcano 1,707 meters high with a beautiful shape similar to Mt.
It is located east of Jododaira, one of the Azuma mountain range.

It has a large mortar-shaped crater, so named because it looks like a small Mt.

In early spring, the remaining snow forms a rabbit shape and is called “Agatsuma no Yuki-Usagi” (snow rabbit of Agatsuma), which is a poetic tradition that signals the arrival of spring to the citizens of Fukushima.

It is also called “seed sowing hare” because farmers used to start sowing seeds in the nursery when the snow hare became visible in the old days.

There is a path that circles Azuma Ko-fuji, with a difference in elevation of only 100 meters from Jododaira to the summit.
It takes about 10 minutes to reach the summit by climbing log stairs.

The summit is a typical cone-shaped volcano with a sandy base. The height difference to the bottom of the crater is about 70 meters, and the view from close to the crater is breathtaking.

The crater wall is about 450 meters in diameter, and the 1.5-km round-the-crater course takes about 40 minutes even if you walk slowly, and offers a magnificent view.

If the weather is fine, you can enjoy a view of the Fukushima Basin and Jododaira, making trekking an easy and enjoyable experience.
