It is said that the Atami hot spring was first opened 800 years ago. The name “Atami” comes from the Atami hot spring in Izu, the birthplace of Ito Sukenaga, a vassal of Minamoto no Yoritomo who became the lord of this area after the Battle of Oshu.
During the period from the Nanbokucho Period to the early Muromachi Period, Hagihime, the daughter of the court nobleman Marikoji Tobo, became seriously ill. Then, Fudo Myoo appeared to her in a dream and told her to go from the capital to the northeast and find a sacred spring on the 500th riverbank.
Following this oracle, Hagihime visited the hot springs of Atami, and it is said that by curing herself in the hot spring, she completely recovered.
Out of her gratitude, her maid of honor Yukie enshrined Fudo Myoo at Omine Fudo, which is said to be located near Fudo Falls. The name of the 500 river that runs through the hot spring resort is derived from this legend.
Take JR Tohoku Shinkansen and get off at Koriyama Station.
Change to the Ban-Etsu-Nishi Line and get off at “Bandai Atami Station” (13 minutes by rapid train)
