Lake Inawashiro

A spectacular lake with seasonal scenery

Lake Inawashiro” is the fourth largest lake in Japan and has an almost oval shape. The lakeside scenery is diverse, and fishing, swimming, and camping can be enjoyed.

This lake is the largest in Japan at approximately 100㎢ and has an expanse that resembles an ocean. It is also known as “Lake Tenkagami” (meaning “Heavenly Mirror Lake” in Japanese) because of the clarity of its water and its beauty.

The lake is attractive because it can be enjoyed in various ways depending on the season. In spring, visitors can enjoy cherry blossoms along the lakeshore while enjoying the magnificent view of Mt. In summer, visitors can enjoy lake bathing, water sports, and camping. In autumn, the lake is beautiful with the autumn leaves spreading over the surface of the lake, and in winter, swans visit the lake.

Especially in winter, visitors can enjoy beautiful natural ice scenery called “shibuki ices. The spectacle of lake water freezing in the wind and forming ice that sticks to trees is something that is hard to find in Japan.

There are many scenic spots along the lakeside, but the view of Lake Inawashiro from the “Showa no Mori” observation deck is especially recommended. You can also take a sightseeing boat ride all year round.

There are ranches, hot springs, and fashionable cafes in the surrounding area. In addition, ski resorts such as “Inawashiro Ski Resort” offer winter sports. Whether you want to spend your time relaxing or being active, this area will satisfy both.

Lake Inawashiro has been selected as one of the 100 most scenic spots in Japan, and is visited by many tourists who enjoy camping and other outdoor activities throughout the year. Lake Inawashiro is also known as a swan flying site, and sightseeing boats operate from and to Nagahama.

On the northern shore of the lake are the Tenkyo-kaku, an important cultural property, and the Hideyo Noguchi Memorial Museum.
