Kimonos of oiran (courtesans)! Rare Collection of Antique Kimonos

The Japan Kimono Culture Museum mainly exhibits old-fashioned kimonos (antique kimonos) from the Edo period to the early Showa period.

The museum’s collection consists of approximately 3,000 kimonos, of which about 60 are on display at any given time, including many valuable kimonos such as the kimono worn by oiran (courtesans).

Three times a year, special exhibitions are held, and kimonos related to the theme of the exhibition are also displayed. In addition, a wide range of items such as cosmetic tools and ornamental hairpins are on display, as well as a full range of tools related to costumes and ornaments of the period.

The museum also houses the “Showa-no-Kurashikan,” a collection of furniture and toys from the early Showa period, as well as a café.

The museum exhibits mainly “old kimonos” (antique kimonos) from the Edo period to the early Showa period.

The museum is one of the largest kimono collections in Japan in terms of number and breadth, with approximately 3,000 kimonos in its collection, about 60 of which are on display at any given time, including many valuable kimonos such as kairin-dochukimono and furisode (long-sleeved kimono).

Exhibits are divided into permanent and special exhibitions. In the permanent exhibition, kimonos such as oiran and furisode are displayed, and in the special exhibition, kimonos are exhibited according to the theme.

The special exhibition changes three times a year, and new exhibits are introduced. A wide range of items such as cosmetic tools and ornamental hairpins are also on display, as well as a variety of costume-related tools and ornaments from the Edo period onward.

In addition, a number of posters from the Meiji period and women’s magazines from the early Showa period are also on display, offering a glimpse into the lives of ordinary people.

The museum also has a space called the “Nostalgia Museum,” which houses a collection of prewar furniture, miniature cars, dolls, and other nostalgic toys. There is also a café where visitors can take a relaxing break.
